Cadet programmes

An airline logo is not a job offer.

Cadet and mentored schemes are the cleanest way onto a jet — when they are open, when your passport matches, and when the bond is a contract you have actually read. Intakes open and close. This page is a map, not this week's vacancy list.

Empty cadet briefing room looking onto a simulator bay

Nationals

Flag carriers often hire their own passport first. If that is not you, self-fund.

Mentored

You still pay. You get a preferred path and sometimes a conditional offer.

MPL

Fast onto one operator. Awkward if you leave. Read the bond twice.

Selection

What a cadet board actually does.

  1. 01

    Eligibility screen

Passport, age, height/reach, degree, and medical. If you miss one published number, do not pay a 'cadet prep' course that cannot change it.

  2. 02

    Aptitude

COMPASS, PILAPT, ADAPT, or an airline's own battery: memory, multi-tasking, instrument interpretation, maths under time.

  3. 03

    English

ICAO 4 is the legal floor. Cadet interviews are a briefing in English. Level 5–6 is what gets you through the room.

  4. 04

    Group and HR

A problem to solve with strangers, then a values interview. They are hiring a crew member, not a lone hero.

  5. 05

    Simulator

You are not expected to be type-rated. You are expected to listen, scan, and take instruction without arguing with the box.

  6. 06

    Medical and contract

Class 1, background, then the bond. A bond is debt in another font. Know the break fee before you sign.

Programmes worth knowing.

Links go to official pages. Always read the current notice for age, height, degree, and nationality. If a shop is selling “Emirates cadet” and is not on this list, that is data.

Self-funded

Emirates Flight Training Academy

Dubai South, UAE

Who
UAE nationals are the sponsored core. International students are typically self-funded.
Age
Usually 18–30 at course start — read the current intake.
Gates
GCAA Class 1, height often from 160 cm, maths/physics, ICAO English.
Money
Sponsored for many UAE nationals. Self-funded for most others — academy prices sit at the top of the GCC range.

Dual GCAA/EASA ATO. Closest structured path if Emirates is the long-term target. Graduation is not a job contract.

Nationals

Qatar Airways Cadet Pilot Programme

Doha, Qatar

Who
Qatari nationals. This is a nationalisation scheme, not an open global cadet class.
Age
Typically 17–27 at application.
Gates
Height from about 160 cm, Class 1, strong academics, competitive selection.
Money
Scholarship / airline-funded for selected Qataris. Limited seats each year.

If you are not Qatari, do not wait on this intake. Self-fund a recognised ATPL and convert later.

Periodic

Etihad Aviation Training

Abu Dhabi, UAE

Who
UAE national cadet windows, plus training phases historically delivered with European partners such as FTEJerez.
Age
Published per intake.
Gates
GCAA medical, English, aptitude, and nationality rules on the notice.
Money
Mix of national cadet funding and paid ATO courses.

Treat Etihad careers and Etihad Aviation Training as two doors. Read which one is actually hiring cadets this year.

Self-funded

Air Arabia Academy (MPL)

Sharjah, UAE

Who
Multi-national MPL cadets selected onto an Air Arabia-tied course — not a walk-in CPL.
Age
Set per course. Expect early-to-mid 20s preference.
Gates
GCAA Class 1, English, selection, and a bond to the operator.
Money
Course fees plus a multi-year bond. The pitch includes line hours on the A320 family.

MPL is efficient if you stay. Leaving early is messy. Read the bond twice.

Nationals

Oman Air / national cadet windows

Muscat, Oman

Who
When open, these seats are for Omani nationals. Expatriates should not plan around them.
Age
Published on the careers notice.
Gates
CAA Oman Class 1, English, degree or diploma filters as advertised.
Money
Typically sponsored with a service bond.

Watch Oman Air careers and CAA Oman notices. Between intakes, Oman Aviation Academy is the local self-fund option.

Periodic

PIA cadet / ab-initio intakes

Karachi, Pakistan

Who
Pakistani nationals, when the airline actually opens a cadet or ab-initio class.
Age
Varies. Older notices often sat in the early 20s.
Gates
PCAA Class 1, metrics/physics, English, and a very competitive exam.
Money
Historically a mix of airline and self. Confirm the current circular — do not trust a Facebook rumour.

PIA Training Centre is real. A standing annual cadet class is not. Apply when the notice is on the airline site.

Self-funded

IndiGo Cadet Pilot Programme

India + partner ATOs (FTA Australia, CAE, Skyborne, others)

Who
Indian nationals / OCI. This is the highest-volume cadet path in South Asia.
Age
Typically 18+ with a published upper cap per partner.
Gates
DGCA Class 1, 10+2 physics and maths, English, partner selection.
Money
Almost always self-funded (often ₹1 crore-class all-in). Letter of intent, not a free education.

IndiGo uses several approved providers. Compare total cost, visa, and type-rating inclusion — not the brochure month-count.

Nationals

Singapore Airlines Cadet

Singapore

Who
Singapore citizens and PRs in most intakes. Foreigners are rarely the target.
Age
Young — often 18 to mid-20s.
Gates
Class 1, height/reach, academics, and one of the stricter selections in Asia.
Money
Airline-sponsored for selected cadets, with a bond.

If you do not hold Singapore citizenship or PR, treat this as a reference, not a plan.

Mentored

Ryanair Future Flyer Academy

Partner ATOs across Europe / UK

Who
UK or EU/EEA passport with the right to live and work in Europe/UK.
Age
Ab-initio and gateway (already licensed) streams.
Gates
EASA/UK Class 1, partner-school assessment, English.
Money
Part-sponsored training at listed partners. Conditional job offer at enrolment on current terms — still a large student invoice.

Formerly the Mentored Programme. Only listed partner schools count. A Facebook 'Ryanair cadet' shop is not one.

Mentored

Lufthansa European Flight Academy

Germany and European bases

Who
EU work-right candidates in most streams. Selection is airline-strict.
Age
Published per course.
Gates
EASA Class 1, DLR/airline aptitude, German is an advantage for some bases.
Money
A mix of self-funded academy and group cadet schemes. Bonds apply.

This is airline culture from day one. Useful if Europe is the career, not a stepping stone you have not researched.

Mentored

American Airlines Cadet Academy

USA (partner schools including CAE)

Who
Candidates who can train and work in the United States (citizenship/visa reality first).
Age
Adult; ATP hours still sit at the end of the US pipeline.
Gates
FAA medical, partner selection, TSA.
Money
Self-funded flight training with a defined pathway toward American/Envoys — not a paid degree.

US cadet academies still require you to build ATP hours. Instructing is the usual bridge.

Mentored

Southwest Destination 225°

USA

Who
US work-eligible students at listed partners.
Age
Adult.
Gates
FAA path to CPL/CFI, then hours, then Southwest selection.
Money
Self-funded training. Pathway, not a salary while you train.

A pathway brand. You still buy the hours. Read the partner, not only the airline logo.

Not the nationality they hire?

That is most students. Self-fund an approved school, pass the medical, and keep applying when windows open.
